Puzzle #1: Crossing the River

A farmer is travelling with a chicken, a wolf, and a bag of seeds.

He needs to cross the river, but can only take one thing in the boat at a time.

If he leaves the chicken alone with the wolf, the wolf will eat the chicken.

If he leaves the chicken along with the bag of seeds, the chicken will eat the seeds.

How will the farmer get all three across the river?

You can take things back and forth from both sides of the river.

Start by grabbing the chicken and leave him on the other side of the river.

Go back and grab either the wolf or the seeds. I will grab the wolf.

Bring the wolf to the other side of the river and take the chicken back into the boat with you.

Go back and grab the seeds, but leave the chicken behind.

Bring the seeds to the other side of the river and leave them with the wolf.

Return for the chicken and bring it back to the other side of the river.

Puzzle #2: The Fake Egg

The chickens laid 9 eggs, but a sneaky wolf came and swapped out one of their eggs for a fake one.

The wolf says he will return the real egg if the chickens can figure out which egg is the lighter, fake egg.

But, they can only use the scale two times!

If the chickens can’t figure it out, the wolf gets to steal all of the eggs.

How can you figure out which is the lighter egg by weighing them only two times?

Divide the eggs into groups.

Start by dividing the eggs into 3 piles of 3 eggs. Choose any of the 2 piles to weigh.

The scale will either be unbalanced or will be balanced.

If the scale is unbalanced, then the lighter egg is in the group of eggs that weighs less on the scale.

If the scale is balanced, then the lighter egg is in the group of eggs that hasn’t been weighed yet.

Now, take the group of 3 eggs that has the lightest egg in it and weigh 2 of the eggs.

The scale will either be unbalanced or will be balanced.

If the scale is unbalanced, then the lighter egg is one on the scale weighing less.

If the scale is balanced, then the lighter egg is the egg that hasn’t been weighed yet.

Puzzle #3: High Fives

The chicken’s twin brother has come for a visit. They greet each other with a high-five.

The twin chicken meets one of the other chickens and gives him a high-five to say hello.

The other chickens get confused and want to high-five each other as well.

There are six chickens altogether, and no one high-fives the same chicken more than once.

So, how many high-fives will all the chickens do until the twin can unpack his suitcase?

Create a web on a piece of paper and draw lines from one chicken to the other 5 chickens.

The twin chicken starts and completes 5 high-fives with the other chickens.

The second chicken will only give 4 high-fives because the twin chicken already high-fived him.

The third chicken will only give 3 high-fives because both the twin chicken and the second chicken already high-fived him.

The fourth chicken will only give 2 high-fives, and finally, the fifth chicken will only give 1 high-five.

The sixth chicken has no one to high-five because everyone has already high-fived him.

When we add it all up, it’s 15 high-fives altogether.
